Airbag- How does it Work?

What is an Airbag?

When it comes to the safety features in the car the first thing that we check for are the Airbags. So, now the question comes what exactly it is and how does it protects us? Airbags are a type of automobile safety device that consists of a flexible fabric envelope or cushion that gets inflated immediately during the accident or collision. The main purpose behind the Airbags is to help the passengers inside the car by cushioning them during any crash and provide protection to their bodies when they strike interior objects like the steering wheel or a window.

How does an Airbag Work?

There are basically three main components of the airbag system: the bag, the sensor and the inflation system. When collision occurs sensors are the first component responsible for inflating the airbags. The airbags generally requires a collision force of 16-24 kmph to get inflated. When the sensors senses a collision, the inflation system of the airbag discharges hot nitrogen gas (generally a combination of KNO3 and NaN3) inside the airbag at a speed of around 200 mph and inflates it. After inflation, the gas diffuses through the tiny holes in the airbag which causes it to deflate.

The Theory behind Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Have you ever driven a car on high speed or on slippery grounds and suddenly had to apply your brakes? These surely would have been a nerve breaking moment for you. This is the moment where Anti-lock Braking System or ABS comes on the fore to help you out of the situation.

So what exactly is ABS??  ABS is an automobile safety system that helps the wheels of the vehicle to maintain traction with the road and avoid locking of the wheels and uncontrolled skidding thus enabling the driver to maintain control of the steering and stop the vehicle in the shortest possible time.

Basically Anti-lock Braking System consists of:
  • Controller- This is called the brain of the system. This component reads the inputs and avoids the wheels from locking and skidding.
  • Speed Sensors- Speed Sensors informs the controller that the wheel has locked up.
  • Valves- The Valves works in sync with the Controller and the Pump to add or release pressure from the individual wheel brakes for controlled braking.
  • Pumps- The pumps help in restoring the pressure back.
So, how does Anti-lock Braking System works?

When brakes are applied in the vehicle it pressurizes the hydraulic system thus squeezing the brake pads which slows down the car. If there is any difference between the tyres speed in slowing down, the speed sensors tracks this and then automatically reduces the brake pressure on the wheel by opening the pressure release valve in the hydraulic system.   The pumps then help the vehicle to build back the pressure. Overall, the system works very quickly.

Bajaj RE 60

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Review

The Alto 800 is an entry level car by Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The Alto has been in the Indian market since 2000 and the Alto 800 was launched in 2012.

The Alto 800 is equipped with 796cc engine, 3 cylinders and F8D engine type. It can generate a maximum power of 48 PS @6000 rpm and maximum torque of 69 mm @3500 rpm. It promises to deliver 22.7 kmpl in its petrol version while it can deliver 22.74 kmpl in CNG variant.

The exterior of the car is quite stylish as compared to its previous Altos. It has a thin radiator grille that sports the Suzuki logo over itself. It has a body coloured door handles and powerful looking wheels. On the rear end it sports a large multi element tail light and a finely designed bumper.

The interior of Alto 800 uses grey and brown colour which gives it a plush feeling. The dashboard looks quite good and less cluttered then the existing Alto. The seats are thin and have integrated headrests and an increased space. The legroom height of the car may be an issue for tall people. The Alto 800 has features like AC with heater, power steering and front power windows in the top end variant. Other striking features are remote fuel lid and back door opener, dual trip meter and sun visor for the driver for front passenger or the driver.

In terms of safety, only the top end petrol variant has a driver airbag. Other safety measures include collapsible steering column, high mounted stop lamp, immobilizer and high light leveling.

Overall, if you ask for my verdict Maruti has delivered an excellent car in this segment and stood up to the expectations of customers and the only disappointment is that of safety.
